In this and surrounding quarters sprouted the first examples of Portuguese Mudejar crafts, later to evolve in the Manuelino style.

The sadness and melancholy of its songs are the origins of Fado. Maria Severa Onofriana, first portuguese lady of the Fado was born in Rua do Capelão, in this peculiar quarter.

Nowadays, Mouraria is a melting pot of different cultures and a place that keeps old popular traditions alive with its Fado houses, bars and tavernas.



Mouraria is one of the most traditional quarters of Lisbon. Its name (Moorish quarter) was given when D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, after the conquest of Lisbon, confined the Moors to this part of town. Later, after the Christian conquest this quarter was inhabited by the Jews that were also circumscribed to the Castelo quarters.

The flat:

Bright and
airy one bedroom flat with one or two double beds. Fully fitted kitchen,
washing machine and all the necessary equipment to cook, eat and…sleep.

We also
propose guests to see the flat as a Gallery space. The house is decorated with
sculptures and unique furniture that can be bought if so desired.

There is
also a selection of wines, friandises, small handycrafted pieces and other
souvenirs that can be acquired at the
flat thus avoiding the rush of last minute shopping.

And a small
library for the guests. You can pick and bring with you any book as long as you
leave any other in its place.

MIGUEL FIGUEIREDO was born in Lisbon in 1962. After his Matura he studied Graphic Design and Ceramic Arts at the Antonio Arroio Decorative Art school in Lisbon. During his studies he worked as a graphic designer and as a teacher. His ceramics work was developed in factories, private ateliers and workshop attendandances. It soon became the basis for his later work as a sculptor. For the past twenty years he has been working seasonally in the atelier of Master Cesare Sartori in Bassano, Italy and he worked in the National museum of Azulejo in Lisbon for five years. He his a freelance scenographer and he works for an independent theatre company, cinema and television, in Lisbon. His work has been selected for several collective international sculpture exhibitions, such as the national open air sculpture prize in Padova, Italy. He took part in the Lisbon Expo 98 and has been exhibiting individually since 1987. His work is represented by the São Mamede gallery (Lisbon), in public and private collections in Portugal and abroad.
